Top 5 Tools For Writers-It’s Coffee Time, Part Three

In this article, we will delve into the top 5 tools every writer employs during their writing process

Part Three of the Article

Introduction

Greetings, dear readers and loyal followers!

Ah, coffee! That sacred liquid that propels us writers like fuel, sparks our imagination, warms us on cold winter nights, and, most importantly, keeps us alert and tense through long strings of words and sentences flowing from our pens to paper!

It surely deserves to be in the Top 5 Tools For Writers!

What more to say about coffee that you haven’t already heard, and what to write to pique your interest is not an easy task. However, today I decided to face it and present you with this article, so let’s get down to business.

What is Coffee, and Where Does It Come From?

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages on the Third Rock from the Sun and also one of the most widely used legal stimulants in the history of humankind.

It is obtained by roasting and grinding the fruits of the Coffea plant and is served in many different forms such as Turkish coffee, espresso, or filter coffee.

It originates from tropical parts of Africa and is now plantation-grown worldwide, divided into several different types, with Arabica and Robusta being the most well-known.

Legend of Coffee

Legend has it that coffee was originally discovered in Ethiopia in the 9th century in a region known as Kaffa. A shepherd named Kaldi noticed his goats eating red berries, the fruit of some strange plant, while grazing.

After consuming these berries, the goats became unusually cheerful and energetic, frolicking around, which intrigued the shepherd’s imagination.

Shepherd Kaldi decided to take a risk and try these strange red berries. After consuming them, he noticed a strange liveliness and a feeling of life vitality, so he reported all this to local priests who, following Kaldi’s example, also decided to try the effects of this strange plant.

Convinced of the miraculous, stimulative energy of the red berries, they decided to use them during nightly prayers to stay awake, marking a turning point in the use of coffee, which has since become a beverage used around the globe.

Global Spread of Coffee

Coffee quickly found its way to the Arabian Peninsula through traders who noticed its market value, becoming a hit at social gatherings.

The first coffee shop serving coffee was opened in Damascus, where coffee soon became a ritual connecting people and slowly spread throughout the world.

Today, it would be challenging to imagine any social event without coffee, not to mention that no serious writer gives up caffeine addiction.

Types of Coffee

  • Arabica (Coffea arabica): Mild and complex taste with notes of fruit, flowers, and sugar, less caffeine, grown at higher altitudes in areas with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall.
  • Robusta (Coffea canephora): Strong and bitter taste, pronounced aroma with notes of nuts and wood, higher caffeine content, grown at lower altitudes in warmer and more humid areas.
  • Liberica (Coffea liberica): Specific taste, sometimes described as fruity or floral, with a slightly “wild” aroma compared to Arabica, higher caffeine, and less common in some parts of Africa.
  • Excelsa (Coffea liberica var. liberica): Diverse taste with notes of fruit, flowers, and spices, a distinctive aroma with citrus elements, higher caffeine concentration similar to Robusta, grown in Southeast Asia.
  • Stenophylla (Coffea stenophylla): Fresh, fruity taste, aromatic with slight floral notes and citrus elements, low to medium caffeine content, grown in some areas of West Africa, and is very rare.

Kopi Luwak — Coffee from Civet Droppings

Yes, you read that correctly, and it’s not a joke or clickbait. This type of coffee is obtained in a completely bizarre and strange way, and it is also the most expensive and rarest coffee in the world.

This coffee is obtained from the feces of a civet, a small mammal found in tropical regions, especially in Indonesia.

The civet chooses the best, ripest, and juiciest coffee fruits, and eats them, during the digestion process, the coffee fruit’s flesh is digested, and the seeds pass through the civet’s digestive tract almost untouched, coming out with the feces.

The coffee seeds are then collected, thoroughly cleaned from the feces, further fermented, roasted, and ground to obtain Kopi Luwak coffee, known for its unique taste and aroma!

This whole process undoubtedly contributes to the taste and aroma of the coffee. Since we know that civets only choose the best fruits, we can confidently say that Kopi Luwak is a unique and the strangest coffee produced on this planet.

It is important to note that there is an ethical dilemma in the production of this coffee because civets are kept in captivity, which is certainly not nice or natural. It would be good to release them into the wild while collecting coffee seeds in nature.

Coffee Preparation and Brewing Devices

Each of us loves coffee in our own way, and everyone prepares it differently. Here, we will mention some of the most important preparation methods and devices used for making coffee.

Espresso

Espresso is prepared in an espresso machine by having hot water pass through finely ground coffee under high pressure. The result is a small amount of concentrated coffee with a rich flavor.

Moka Pot

Unlike espresso coffee, here, water is heated in the lower part of the device, creating pressure that pushes water through ground coffee into the upper container. This method produces coffee very similar to espresso.

Drip or Filter Coffee

Drip coffee is prepared in an automatic drip coffee maker. Water passes through filtered ground coffee, drop by drop. This process results in a mild and consistent cup of coffee.

Turkish Coffee

Fine ground coffee is brewed with water and sugar (optional) in a traditional Turkish coffee pot called a cezve, which is nothing more than a metal coffee-cooking container. After boiling, the sediment is separated, and the coffee is served.

It keeps us awake, helps us work, and is a very important tool for a writer. But besides writers, coffee is also a means that brings society together and invites conversation and socializing. It is used in meetings, farewells, and all possible events you can imagine.

Top 5 Tools For Writers, Part Two

In this article, we will delve into the second one of the top 5 tools every writer employs during their writing process

A writer with gray hear in his working room full of papers and stuff

Part Two of the Article

Introduction

Greetings, dear readers and loyal followers!

Today, I’ll share insights about the second of the Top 5 Tools For Writers — a tool for self-proofreading, much like Grammarly or Ginger.

Why I included this tool among the essential writing aids isn’t hard to fathom. Every writer, even the best, best-selling, and elitist, needs someone to edit their text.

Text editing is a thankless and challenging task involving text scrutiny and correction without altering the writer’s tone or style.

Editors are unsung heroes or shadow workers whose contributions to a text remain unnoticed until readers spot a grammatical error. It’s only then that you realize someone should’ve reviewed and edited that text — a task demanding great concentration and time.

With the advent of computers, as mentioned in the previous section, automatic editors like Grammarly or Ginger were invented. These tools somewhat substitute human editors, easing the lives of amateur writers and even some professionals.

Why “somewhat”? Because no program or application is perfect yet. It’s challenging, almost impossible, to create an application that behaves exactly like a human.

Human editors remain in demand and irreplaceable for professional writers, but AI is slowly but surely catching up to their capabilities.

https://cryptonftworlds.blogspot.com/2023/11/ai-blessing-from-heaven-or-curse-from.html

Us Ordinary Mortal Writers

For us ordinary mortals who write here on Medium and similar platforms, striving to build our name and audience, tools like Grammarly or Ginger are more than sufficient.

For non-professionals like us, the value of these tools is invaluable — not just for text correction but also for the time they save.

Imagine how a text from someone not from an English-speaking region would look without translation and self-correction tools or a human editor. It would likely be a disaster, full of grammatical errors and poorly translated words, not to mention issues with tone and sentence construction.

Thankfully, we amateur writers now have tools at our disposal to edit our texts without hiring a human editor, and it’s very affordable or entirely free.

I mentioned “free” because, like all programs, Grammarly and Ginger have basic versions that are entirely free, along with paid versions.

After this whole discussion or my tirade, as you may call it, let’s delve a bit more into these tools that belong to the Top 5 Tools For Writers, according to my free estimation.

https://cryptonftworlds.blogspot.com/2024/02/top-5-tools-for-writers-part-one.html

Grammarly vs. Ginger

Firstly, I’d like to emphasize that both Grammarly and Ginger are excellent tools with their advantages and disadvantages. If you can’t decide on just one, perhaps it’s best to take both, as I did.

Recently, with the advent of AI, these programs expanded their offerings and capabilities. If you’re looking for a tool that is not only a self-proofreader but also an excellent translator, Ginger would be your choice.

On the other hand, if you’re a writer concerned with detailed analysis, achieving specific goals, and checking for plagiarism, you should opt for Grammarly.

Grammarly: Pros and Cons

Grammarly is an AI-driven writing assistant established in 2009, evolving into one of the major players in its field.

Grammarly Pros

  • Uses AI for more precise corrections.
  • Checks grammar, and spelling, and identifies mistakes while allowing the creation of a personal word dictionary for each writer.
  • Includes a plagiarism checker, comparing your writing with the web and providing a plagiarism score.
  • Rates the readability of your text on a scale from 1 to 100.
  • Provides an accuracy score to gauge your precision.
  • Suggests writing styles based on your target audience.
  • Adapts to your writing tone.
  • Offers multiple forms of usage, such as an application, web extension, integration into software like Word, Google Docs, and more.

Grammarly Cons

  • Not flawless; occasional mistakes may occur.
  • Relatively costly for the pro version.
  • Removed errors might still appear sometimes.
  • Faces issues detecting plagiarism in MS Office versions.

Ginger: Pros and Cons

Ginger is one of the oldest AI-driven writing assistants, even predating Grammarly, established in 2007.

Ginger Pros

  • Its most valuable aspect is grammar checking, identifying spelling, style, and grammatical errors during writing.
  • Notably checks punctuation, similar to Grammarly.
  • Features a sentence rephrase, beneficial for writers prone to complex and lengthy sentences.
  • Double-clicking on a word opens a menu with synonyms and their definitions, allowing you to choose any synonym for your written word.
  • Has a translator for 40 world languages, facilitating translation between them.
  • Like Grammarly, Ginger can be installed on multiple devices and in various forms, such as a desktop application, web extension, or integration into Word, Email, etc.

Ginger Cons

  • Lacks the ability to load documents.
  • Relatively costly for the pro version.
  • Not flawless; occasional errors may occur.
  • The accuracy of the translator is similar to Google Translate.
  • Lacks plagiarism checking and detailed writing analysis like Grammarly.

Conclusion

Now that we’ve analyzed both writing assistance tools, it’s safe to say that each has its pros and cons. Only you, dear readers, can decide which one suits you best.

If you ask me, I’d choose both, as I did. When you combine both tools, you get one comprehensive tool that has everything a writer could wish for.

Regarding prices and plans, my advice is to start with the free plan for both tools. Once you truly ascertain your needs, choose a plan and purchase the product.

Top 5 Tools For Writers, Part One

In this article, we will delve into the top 5 tools every writer employs during their writing process and we will review each one of them separately.

A writer with gray hear in his working room full of papers and stuff

Part One of the Article

Introduction

Hello, dear readers and loyal followers!

As I’ve been quite occupied lately and haven’t shared anything new with you, I’m here now to present an excellent article on the Top 5 Tools For Writers that help in creating their articles.

Each writer has their rituals and habits when crafting their articles, and I am no exception. However, some tools are essential, without which no writer can effectively create.

It would be challenging, nearly impossible, to be a writer today without a personal computer. If you were born 60–70 years ago, instead of a laptop, you’d have a typewriter for content creation. Back then, there was no simple copy-paste; making copies required the use of mimeograph paper, and every typing mistake was visible and irremovable on paper.

Many writers of that era used quill pens and notebooks or diaries for note-taking instead of today’s mobile phones, tablets, and millions of apps for storing ideas and thoughts. Some writers still prefer a quill pen and paper over mobile phones or tablets.

Looking further into the past, writers once used bird feathers and squid ink for writing, and the only way to copy content was by manually transcribing it. Jobs like “content transcriber” existed, where their sole duty as the name suggests was copying content by hand.

As we can see, tools have changed and evolved throughout history, but their purpose has remained the same: to transfer content from the writer’s mind to a medium from which readers can later consume what the writer intended to convey.

Every era has brought its writing-related professions, each with its own set of tools. Today, we’ll discuss the Top 5 Tools For Writers that are indispensable for modern individuals.

I envision this article as a series, where each part covers one of the Top 5 Tools For Writers. First, let’s list them, and then we’ll analyze each in detail.

I must warn you that these won’t be conventional tools, but those without which no writer can truly create. So, be prepared for some small surprises.

Top 5 Tools For Writers:

  • Computer/Laptop
  • Grammarly or a similar self-correction application
  • Coffee and a good coffee machine, without which no work is complete
  • Note-taking tools, whether digital or traditional
  • Internet connectivity

You might find the selection of these tools peculiar, but don’t worry; I’ll explain everything article by article when each tool is discussed.

Today, let’s start with the first of these Top 5 Tools For Writers that help them in creation, and that is, of course, a personal computer or laptop.

Personal Computer/Laptop

The history of this tool is undoubtedly known to all of you, so I won’t dwell on it much. I’ll just say that this is a product of the 20th century when the first computer was born and developed to unprecedented levels in the 21st century, where it is now universally accepted and widespread worldwide.

This machine has become an indispensable tool for every writer in the 21st century. It’s challenging to imagine writing as it is today without its use. In today’s technological age and the age of general information, possessing a computer is no longer a luxury, as it was at the end of the 20th century; it has become a necessary tool for work.

Never in the history of humankind has information been so accessible and at our fingertips as they are today. The possibilities of interpersonal communication have reached science fiction levels, so it’s no wonder that writing has evolved to unprecedented limits.

Personal computers and the internet have enabled anyone today to express their thoughts and publicly publish them. Thousands of blogs, social networks, forums, content publishing portals, and other modern-age crazes have sprung up.

Advantages of Personal Computers:

  • The computer has enabled anyone to be a writer today, but being a good and read writer succeeds only a few. However, regardless of that, everyone has equal chances, and the competition among writers has become fairer.
  • Even if you don’t become globally popular, you can gather an impressive number of followers for your blog, social media, or on some content publishing platform like the one we are on now, which is, of course, Medium.
  • Computers have provided us with the ability to communicate research and save and edit content from the comfort of our homes.
  • One of the greatest advantages is that there is no need for an editor, as the computer can download any of thousands of editing applications, but we will deal with that in another part of this article.
  • Furthermore, the advantages of computers include eliminating the need for massive paper consumption, and archives have faded into twilight, becoming redundant and unnecessary because everything can be neatly organized, archived, and saved directly on the computer.

Disadvantages of Personal Computers:

  • Just as every tool has its advantages and disadvantages, so do computers. We can say that their greatest advantage is also their greatest disadvantage. They are machines, and machines can encounter various issues.
  • Computers can break down, be hacked, stolen, or infected by viruses, and files and folders can be deleted. In an instant, all the work of a writer can be lost. Besides these errors, thousands of others can occur, so we must be very cautious with the content we have written.
  • Because of all this, a writer must store all their work in multiple places, preferably in the cloud and on paper.

Conclusion

As we’ve seen through this text, each era has its advantages and disadvantages, but I think that through this digital revolution, we are currently experiencing, we have stepped into a fascinating era for writers and their content.

We should feel like Christopher Columbus and other explorers who stepped foot on new land because it was a land of countless possibilities and a new beginning.

Thus, we now find ourselves in front of an endless and unexplored digital galaxy full of discoveries and millions of possibilities waiting to be uncovered.

We are now some new digital pioneers paving the way through this new digital galaxy, encountering discoveries and challenges every day.

Even the discovery of AI is a significant thing, and it shouldn’t be seen as a threat to writing and writers. Instead, it should be accepted as a tool that we will harness for our benefit and use for better creation.

Here, we have slowly reached the end of the first part of the article, and I hope you found it interesting. However, what follows in the next installments will delight you even more because we are just getting to the most interesting parts that I want to share with you.

In this article, you will find some links that are affiliate links. If you click on one of those links and buy something we will get a small fee, but that fee is not charged to you, instead it is paid to us by the product owner or reseller.
