The topic of today’s article is quite timely, as it’s the beginning of a new month on Medium, which means account reviews and blocking accounts that violate the platform’s rules.
One of the most popular questions asked by many writers — especially beginners — is whether AI can be used to write and publish articles on Medium and trick the platform’s algorithm.
Medium’s Rules on AI Content
Medium’s rules are clear and uncompromising on this matter: articles written solely by AI cannot participate in the Medium Partner Program, which means such articles won’t earn you any money.
But is it possible to use AI in a way that doesn’t jeopardize your account? Keep reading to find out!
Can You Use AI Without Risks?
Since almost every writer here swears that they are not there for the money, but for the sake of a great community of writers, learning new methods in writing, honing writing skills, blah, blah, blah, and other crap that I don’t believe in at all, then using AI shouldn’t be a problem and there shouldn’t be any banned user accounts.
Medium actually allows the use of AI — even for writing entire articles. However, such articles cannot be part of the Partner Program, won’t earn you a cent, and won’t be boosted to readers outside your followers.
I’m here primarily to earn a few cents, and then to hone my skills along the way, meet people, and blah, blah, blah, and I think that’s how it is with most people here, only it sounds nicer and deeper when you write that money is not a priority and that you’re on Medium for the wonderful community of people, writing, learning and similar nonsense and shit that no one alive believes

Why Trying to Outsmart Medium’s Algorithm Fails
So like I said everything should be nice and wonderful, but in reality, it’s not, because almost every new writer tries to insert behind the paywall some article written by ChatGPT or a similar AI program thinking that he will screw up the Medium algorithm.
And even your dear writer, i.e. my little self, tried to screw up Medium, but I realized very quickly and in time that it was not possible, so I gave up using AI in unauthorized ways and started writing my own articles, which paid off in the long run.
Some use AI “humanizers” to make AI content appear as if it was written by a human. Essentially, they employ one robot to fix the work of another robot, hoping to disguise the content as human-made.
What a ridiculous waste of effort! All that effort could have been better spent writing original articles, as Medium’s algorithm still detects violations, resulting in bans and wasted time.
As I said, in the end, everything is revealed and all the effort goes to waste, user accounts are banned, and writers lament, cry, and complain to each other through comments and even articles, mourn the wasted time, and curse Medium and everyone else for their torments.
All the best and I really regret the few unfairly banned writers who, for who knows what reason, the algorithm recognized as violators of the rules, banned and put to trouble for absolutely no reason!
We got a little off-topic, so let’s get back to what we’re here for today: the possibility of using AI on Medium.
The Right Way to Use AI on Medium
Yes, it is indeed possible to use AI on Medium, but maybe not in the way you imagined!
So you can’t give ChatGPT a prompt and give it complete control and the entire creation of an article so that later that article is published using the copy-paste method.
But it is possible to use AI for its real purpose for which it is intended, which is to be a tool, an assistant, a researcher who will help you with your writing.
Here’s how you can use AI effectively:
- Generate Ideas: Use AI to brainstorm titles or ideas for your articles.
- Conduct Research: Let AI find interesting facts or insights, saving you hours of online searching.
- Proofreading and Editing: Use AI to check grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Translation: AI tools can help you translate your work into different languages.
However, the final article must be your original work. If you write your articles this way, there’s no risk to your account, and you can confidently use AI as a helper — not a replacement.
Why Originality Matters
No one can be fooled into thinking AI-generated content is human-made. Machine-written texts often lack depth, color, and the unique spirit even the worst human writer possesses. Medium’s algorithm is specifically designed to detect irregularities, and its sole purpose is to identify and penalize violations.
Write your own articles and be original. AI should assist you, not replace you. That’s my message for you today!
