Top 5 Tools For Writers-It’s Coffee Time, Part Three

In this article, we will delve into the top 5 tools every writer employs during their writing process

Part Three of the Article

Introduction

Greetings, dear readers and loyal followers!

Ah, coffee! That sacred liquid that propels us writers like fuel, sparks our imagination, warms us on cold winter nights, and, most importantly, keeps us alert and tense through long strings of words and sentences flowing from our pens to paper!

It surely deserves to be in the Top 5 Tools For Writers!

What more to say about coffee that you haven’t already heard, and what to write to pique your interest is not an easy task. However, today I decided to face it and present you with this article, so let’s get down to business.

What is Coffee, and Where Does It Come From?

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages on the Third Rock from the Sun and also one of the most widely used legal stimulants in the history of humankind.

It is obtained by roasting and grinding the fruits of the Coffea plant and is served in many different forms such as Turkish coffee, espresso, or filter coffee.

It originates from tropical parts of Africa and is now plantation-grown worldwide, divided into several different types, with Arabica and Robusta being the most well-known.

Legend of Coffee

Legend has it that coffee was originally discovered in Ethiopia in the 9th century in a region known as Kaffa. A shepherd named Kaldi noticed his goats eating red berries, the fruit of some strange plant, while grazing.

After consuming these berries, the goats became unusually cheerful and energetic, frolicking around, which intrigued the shepherd’s imagination.

Shepherd Kaldi decided to take a risk and try these strange red berries. After consuming them, he noticed a strange liveliness and a feeling of life vitality, so he reported all this to local priests who, following Kaldi’s example, also decided to try the effects of this strange plant.

Convinced of the miraculous, stimulative energy of the red berries, they decided to use them during nightly prayers to stay awake, marking a turning point in the use of coffee, which has since become a beverage used around the globe.

Global Spread of Coffee

Coffee quickly found its way to the Arabian Peninsula through traders who noticed its market value, becoming a hit at social gatherings.

The first coffee shop serving coffee was opened in Damascus, where coffee soon became a ritual connecting people and slowly spread throughout the world.

Today, it would be challenging to imagine any social event without coffee, not to mention that no serious writer gives up caffeine addiction.

Types of Coffee

  • Arabica (Coffea arabica): Mild and complex taste with notes of fruit, flowers, and sugar, less caffeine, grown at higher altitudes in areas with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall.
  • Robusta (Coffea canephora): Strong and bitter taste, pronounced aroma with notes of nuts and wood, higher caffeine content, grown at lower altitudes in warmer and more humid areas.
  • Liberica (Coffea liberica): Specific taste, sometimes described as fruity or floral, with a slightly “wild” aroma compared to Arabica, higher caffeine, and less common in some parts of Africa.
  • Excelsa (Coffea liberica var. liberica): Diverse taste with notes of fruit, flowers, and spices, a distinctive aroma with citrus elements, higher caffeine concentration similar to Robusta, grown in Southeast Asia.
  • Stenophylla (Coffea stenophylla): Fresh, fruity taste, aromatic with slight floral notes and citrus elements, low to medium caffeine content, grown in some areas of West Africa, and is very rare.

Kopi Luwak — Coffee from Civet Droppings

Yes, you read that correctly, and it’s not a joke or clickbait. This type of coffee is obtained in a completely bizarre and strange way, and it is also the most expensive and rarest coffee in the world.

This coffee is obtained from the feces of a civet, a small mammal found in tropical regions, especially in Indonesia.

The civet chooses the best, ripest, and juiciest coffee fruits, and eats them, during the digestion process, the coffee fruit’s flesh is digested, and the seeds pass through the civet’s digestive tract almost untouched, coming out with the feces.

The coffee seeds are then collected, thoroughly cleaned from the feces, further fermented, roasted, and ground to obtain Kopi Luwak coffee, known for its unique taste and aroma!

This whole process undoubtedly contributes to the taste and aroma of the coffee. Since we know that civets only choose the best fruits, we can confidently say that Kopi Luwak is a unique and the strangest coffee produced on this planet.

It is important to note that there is an ethical dilemma in the production of this coffee because civets are kept in captivity, which is certainly not nice or natural. It would be good to release them into the wild while collecting coffee seeds in nature.

Coffee Preparation and Brewing Devices

Each of us loves coffee in our own way, and everyone prepares it differently. Here, we will mention some of the most important preparation methods and devices used for making coffee.

Espresso

Espresso is prepared in an espresso machine by having hot water pass through finely ground coffee under high pressure. The result is a small amount of concentrated coffee with a rich flavor.

Moka Pot

Unlike espresso coffee, here, water is heated in the lower part of the device, creating pressure that pushes water through ground coffee into the upper container. This method produces coffee very similar to espresso.

Drip or Filter Coffee

Drip coffee is prepared in an automatic drip coffee maker. Water passes through filtered ground coffee, drop by drop. This process results in a mild and consistent cup of coffee.

Turkish Coffee

Fine ground coffee is brewed with water and sugar (optional) in a traditional Turkish coffee pot called a cezve, which is nothing more than a metal coffee-cooking container. After boiling, the sediment is separated, and the coffee is served.
