George Santos, Businessman and Politician or Criminal and Liar?

Introduction
George Anthony Devolder Santos, the former self-styled gay Republican congressman from New York, found himself once again at the center of media attention following a series of posts he published on the social network X in early 2025.
This politician has long been known to the public and press for his bombastic statements and controversial social-media posts, later revealed to be a web of lies and deceptions he wove to paint himself in a different, more favorable light.
Those posts went viral almost immediately, sparking a storm across the USA, tallying millions of views and tens of thousands of comments.
One especially alarming — and at the very least controversial — claim was Santos’s allegation that a “pedophile cabal” existed within the DOJ and the upper echelons of the U.S. government. That statement, it turned out, was an attempt to derail the course of his criminal trial and distract public attention from the real issues at hand.
In the following article, we provide context for that accusation and the reactions it provoked, as well as a chronology of Santos’s life, career, and spectacular fall from politics — precipitated by his criminal activities such as fraud and identity theft, fabricating his résumé, and concocting false stories about his family’s lucrative past and wartime suffering.
Biography of George Santos
Telling the true story of this peculiar figure is no easy task — cutting through the layers of lies and fabrications he’s spun over the years is a challenge. We will, however, stick solely to firmly established, verifiable facts.
George Santos was born on July 22, 1988, in Queens, New York, to a family of Brazilian immigrants living in very modest circumstances. His mother worked as a cook and housekeeper, while his father was a bricklayer. Wikipedia
According to relatives’ accounts, Santos developed a reputation even as a child for petty theft and lying. He completed high school and formally obtained a GED, but never attended college, despite later falsely claiming to hold a degree in economics.
Before attempting a career in politics, he took on various low-profile jobs: customer-service roles at Dish Network in Queens, handling calls from Portuguese-speaking customers; a stint with small tour operator HotelsPro; and then work for LinkBridge Investors, where he claimed to have been vice president. en.wikipedia.org
In reality, after the firm’s president testified in a lawsuit, it emerged that Santos was merely a commission-based freelancer for LinkBridge Investors.
Toward the end of 2019, he briefly worked at Harbor City Capital — an investment firm later indicted for a massive $17 million Ponzi scheme — although Santos himself was never charged. en.wikipedia.org
He then launched his own consulting firm, the “Devolder Organization,” ostensibly to connect investors with fund managers. On paper, he reported the company had tens of millions in assets and annual revenues in the hundreds of thousands, but it was later revealed to have virtually no real clients or tangible income.
Ideology and Worldview — or a Network of Deception and Lies
The ideology and worldview of this pathological liar are far from clear, making it difficult to classify him as a Republican or Democrat. Though his brief political career was closely tied to Republicans and Trump’s MAGA movement, he never maintained consistency in anything.
Since 2019, he had been an active member of the New York Young Republican Club, a group associated with more extreme right-wing circles and conspiracy theories. Wikipedia
Initially, he professed to be a gay conservative — a claim he later retracted. politico.com He then asserted Jewish heritage, which was debunked when records showed he is Catholic. He even appeared at events of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), only to be expelled in 2022 for “deceiving” the organization and “misrepresenting” his Jewish background. Wikipedia
Santos also fabricated academic and professional credentials, claiming to have studied at Baruch College and worked for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup. He falsely alleged that his grandparents had fled Nazi-occupied Europe due to antisemitism, when in fact they were born and raised in Brazil. Wikipedia
He told Republican Party leaders he was a “star” on Baruch College’s volleyball team and had won a league championship by beating Yale — yet Yale had no men’s collegiate volleyball team at that time. Wikipedia
On his campaign website, he stated that his mother was “the first woman to head a major financial institution,” that she worked in the South Tower of the World Trade Center, and that she died “several years later” after surviving the 9/11 attacks. Yet in her 2003 visa application, she declared she had not set foot in the U.S. since 1999. Wikipedia
These are just a sampling of his deceptions; to catalogue them all would fill volumes. Santos appears to have tailored his biography, beliefs, and ideology as it suited him and whichever interlocutor or voter he sought to impress, making it nearly impossible to discern his true convictions.
Political Rise and Fall
Santos’s political ascent was rapid, culminating in his election to the U.S. House of Representatives as the congressman for New York’s 3rd District (Long Island). Yet his downward spiral and eventual downfall were even swifter.
His political career unraveled once investigative journalists exposed the numerous scandals and falsehoods in his past, proving large portions of his biography were outright fabrications. theguardian.com
In December 2023, the House voted to expel him, stripping him of his seat before he had even served a full year. cbsnews.com
He became the first member of the House expelled without prior criminal conviction or Confederate affiliation, the sixth in House history, and the first Republican so expelled.
In 2024, Santos pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and identity theft. cbsnews.com
In April 2025, a federal judge sentenced him to seven-and-a-half years in prison, along with hefty fines and restitution. justice.gov
Conclusion
Though Santos briefly achieved significant political success, all his lies and fabrications eventually came to light, and his life and career crumbled like a house of cards.
His story is a reminder that the life of a fraudster and criminal, no matter how beguiling it may seem, ultimately does not pay off, and that the arm of justice reaches even the most powerful.
Despite his brief political triumphs, George Santos now sits behind bars, having lost everything.
